Fine Bone China vs Ceramic Mugs: What's the Difference?
When you choose a new mug, you might see a lot of different descriptions - eg. ceramic, stoneware, earthenware, porcelain, bone china and fine bone china. But what’s the difference? And does it really matter if you just want a nice cup of tea?
Well, yes and no but it’s always personal preference.
At Jin Designs, I’ve chosen fine bone china and there’s a few reasons for this. It's lightweight, strong and has a quality smooth finish. It also reminds me of the mugs we had when growing up. And the mugs my grandma used to enjoy too. So there’s definitely a bit of sentiment in there too.
There are a few reasons why fine bone china might not always be the preference - for instance you might prefer a heavier ceramic mug for certain hot drinks. So here's a simple guide to the differences and what to look for when choosing your next mug.
What is the difference between fine bone china and ceramic?
This bit might surprise you. Fine bone china is a type of ceramic. Ceramic is the term which describes several different materials including stoneware, earthenware, porcelain and bone china.
So what are the differences? In simple terms:
Earthenware: Tends to be thicker and more porous, often with a more traditional or rustic feel.
Stoneware: Dense and durable, and often used for heavier, chunkier mugs.
Porcelain: Finer and smoother than stoneware and can be made quite thin, giving it a more refined feel.
Fine bone china: Fine, smooth and particularly known for its combination of strength, lightness and translucency.
When you talk about ceramic mugs though you often think of the heavier, thicker mugs you might commonly find made from stoneware or earthenware. Fine bone china feels different to these. It’s usually lighter and finer, with a smooth finish. When you hold it up to the light, you should be able to see that it’s quite translucent. If you have a drink in your mug you should be able to see the contents through the sides when the light comes through it.
The important thing is, neither mug is better than the other, it just depends on the type of mug you enjoy using.
Is fine bone china lighter than ceramic?
In general, yes. Fine bone china mugs tend to be lighter than stoneware or earthenware mugs of a similar size. This is the one thing you’ll probably notice straight away when you pick one up.
The sides of a fine bone china mug can be made thinner while still being strong which gives it that lighter delicate feel. For some people, like tea drinkers, this is exactly what they want from a mug. Others prefer the weight and chunkier feel of stoneware, particularly for coffee or hot chocolate drinks.
Personally, I’m a fine bone china fan, although I do also have some stoneware mugs in my cupboard. And it will depend on time of day and what drink I’m having as to what I’ll grab from the cupboard.
Does tea taste better from fine bone china?
I think it does! But could this be psychological? There are lots of tea drinkers who will tell you that tea tastes better from a fine bone china mug. And I’m definitely one of them.
It could just be part of the experience. Fine bone china feels lighter in your hand and the finer rim feels different when you drink it. It’s a bit like picking a wine glass for red and white wine. There’s certain shapes that work better. Perhaps when something feels nicer to drink from, we convince ourselves that the tea tastes nicer too. It’s all about the experience!
For me, there’s probably a bit of nostalgia in there somewhere. I grew up having tea from fine bone china mugs and I remember my grandma did the same. There were tea sets back then. Wedgwood, Royal Doulton, Portmeirion, those kind of brands. I didn’t drink from them but I remember people had their best china and it would occasionally come out on special occasions. So perhaps a cup of tea in a fine bone china mug just feels more like a proper cup of tea.
Either way, I guess even if there’s no science behind it, if you enjoy your cup of tea more, that’s probably the most important bit.
Is fine bone china fragile?
It might look and feel delicate but fine bone china is surprisingly strong. In fact one of the reasons I choose it for Jin Designs mugs is because you get a lovely lightweight feel without having a mug that needs to be saved for special occasions. You can use it for every day too.
Of course, china is china and if you drop it from height onto a hard kitchen floor, it will break! And like any mug, if you knock the rim or handle it can chip too. But with day to day use, fine bone china is designed to be used and enjoyed rather than be kept at the back of the cupboard with the ‘best china’.
All Jin Designs mugs are dishwasher and microwave safe so although they might have that finer, more delicate appearance, they’re very much made for an everyday cuppa.
Does fine bone china keep your drink hotter?
A lot of fine bone china fans would say yes to this! But it isn’t as straightforward as it might seem. It does depend on a lot of factors ie, how hot was the temperature of the drink before it reached your cup!
Fine bone china is thinner than stoneware so it warms up quickly when you pour in your tea. A thicker stoneware mug takes more heat to warm up, but once warm, the extra weight and thickness can help it hold onto the heat. I think if you’re a fine bone china fan, you’re likely to enjoy the whole experience and yes, in my mind, my hot drinks seem to keep hotter for longer in a fine bone china mug.
What size mug is best?
Mug size is again a personal choice and it can depend on what you’re drinking and also what time of day. Some people prefer a smaller cup at night, or a larger mug for their morning coffee. Some prefer a delicate smaller mug for afternoon tea where they can pour from a teapot. Others like a big mug of hot chocolate on a winter’s day.
At Jin Designs, most of the fine bone china mugs come in two sizes. The Standard Mug holds around 275ml and is the size I tend to choose for my morning coffee and evening cup of tea. The Large Mug holds around 375ml and is a better choice if you like a longer drink or simply prefer a bigger mug.
It’s worth checking the capacity when you’re buying a mug online. Photos can be deceptive and terms like ‘standard’ and ‘large’ can mean very different things from one brand to another so always check the measurements online. The best way is to measure your favourite mug size and compare with the one you want to purchase.
What should you look for when choosing a mug?
There are a few things worth thinking about when choosing a new mug:
Weight: Do you prefer something light in your hand or something heavier and chunkier? Think about the mugs you already reach for most often in your cupboard.
Rim: Do you prefer a finer rim or something a bit thicker? It can make quite a difference to how a mug feels to drink from.
Handle: This needs to feel comfortable in your hand. Think about the size of the handle and how you naturally hold your mug. If you find heavier mugs difficult to hold, a smaller, lightweight fine bone china mug might be a better option.
Size and capacity: Think about what you usually drink and how much of it you like! Check the actual capacity rather than relying on terms such as Standard or Large.
Decoration: Look at how the design has been applied to the mug. Some designs are digitally printed, while others use traditional ceramic decoration methods. This helps create a gloss, hardwearing finish designed to withstand regular use and washing.
Dishwasher and microwave safe: If you’re going to use your mug every day, check the care instructions before buying. All Jin Designs fine bone china mugs are dishwasher and microwave safe. But hand washing is recommended to keep the design and mug looking their best for years to come.
Design: Of course, it’s all about the design too! A well-designed mug can brighten your day, particularly if it features a favourite animal or character that means something to you. If you’re going to use it every day, choose something you’ll enjoy seeing every time you open the cupboard. Or enjoy different designs for different days, drinks and moods!
So, fine bone china or ceramic: which will you choose?
There’s no right or wrong answer to this. It’s purely going to be down to personal preference. If you like a lighter mug with a delicate feel, then fine bone china could be for you. If you prefer something heavier and chunkier, you might be happier with stoneware or earthenware. Or like a lot of us, you probably have a mixture in your cupboard and choose a different mug depending on time of day and what you’re drinking.
