Brief History of the Chocolate Labrador: From Undesirable to Beloved Companion

If we were to tell you that a hundred years ago, brown labradors were not seen as desirable and so they would be culled at birth, would you believe us? Unfortunately, that horrendous fact is true but luckily, society has now changed its opinion and one of the most popular colours for labradors is brown.

Although they were first recognised in the UK Kennel Club in 1903, labrador retrievers have been around even longer than that. Originally from North America, labs were brought to England by aristocrats in the 1800s. Whilst they were usually black, some of the very first labs in the UK carried the brown fur gene and were able to create chocolate coloured puppies.

Labrador Dogs

The brown lab wasn’t actually a common household dog until the 60s when people began to see it for the perfect pup that it is. From then on, they became a favoured breed both as pets and in dog shows.

Each chocolate lab has its own very special personality, just like humans. They do, however, tend to be very loving and fun dogs who enjoy swimming and retrieving. They are also dogs who are well known for being eager to please. As we already established, every dog is different and we can’t generalise about every lab’s intelligence but if you have heard chocolate labs being called a bit dim, perhaps it’s just because they have a tendency to get distracted.
