Taking a Break: A Small Business Reminder to Refresh
As a small business owner one of the hardest things is trying to fit in some time off. Who will run the business while you're away? How do you keep the sales and income coming in? How do you actually step away when it's only yourself driving the business? How do you stop the world from falling apart when you step away?! These are the thoughts that play on my mind when trying to book time off. And I have the feeling I may not be the only small business owner who has these worries!
It's been a year since my last holiday and I was certainly beginning to feel it. Tired, lacking in energy, the inability to cope with small things, the inablity to cope with big things. I knew it was time for a break.
My partner Jen and I packed our bags and jetted off to the beautiful island of Santorini in Greece for a short break. It was lovely. Warm sunshine. Stunning views. Good fun. Gorgeous food. And do you know what? The world of Jin Designs didn't crumble while I was away. It turns out, I'm not as indispensable as I thought!
It was very liberating to disconnect from work. We tried the local food, learned about the land and history, had conversations with people we'd never met before. It was a breath of fresh air to be honest.
The break wasn't just a recharge, it was also a chance to find some inspiration. Stepping away from the day to day gives you a new perspective and a chance to see things from a different angle. I'm not saying I've come back brimming with ideas, but I do feel I've got the headspace now for some creativity - and the energy to move forward.
So if you find yourself stuck in the work cycle, it could be time to take a break. It's so easy to get swept along week after week but what I've learned is the work will always be there when you come back! You just might feel a bit better in handling it.
It's easy to forget that there's a world outside our window. Life is short. It's hard to realise that when you're in it. And if we're not careful, life is going to pass us by before we've had a chance to experience just a little part of it - and while we can, while we are fit and able.
So here's to taking a break and embracing the wonders of life outside work. Plus, it's always a joy coming back to a fur friend...
Now, back to reality! Wonder what might be coming next? It's time to continue this small business journey together : )
